From Winterveld to Azaadville: workshops across six provinces

Between March 2025 and September 2026, the Empowering the Boychild workshops travelled from Gauteng to the Free State, Eastern Cape, North West, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.

By AwqafSA Women's Fund

The Empowering the Boychild project brief lists nineteen workshops organised by AwqafSA Women's Fund between March 2025 and September 2026 — in township schools, community centres and rural schools.

The journey through these dates began on 1 March 2025 at the Umvelinqangi Safe Space and Youth Development Center in Winterveld, Pretoria, and continued through Soweto, Tembisa, Mayfair, Naturena, Soshanguve, Katlehong, Mamelodi, Alexandra and Olievenhoutbosch, to Azaadville on 19 September 2026.

Reaching beyond Gauteng

  • Kroonstad, Free State — Morewag (14 June 2025)
  • Mdantsane, East London — Dickson Dyani Senior Primary School (17 October 2025)
  • Boitekong, North West — Boitekong Secondary School (22 November 2025)
  • Ozwathini, KwaZulu-Natal — Lukhasa High School (6 March 2026)
  • Umzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal — Dumakude High School (7 March 2026)
  • Wellington, Cape Town — Newtown High School (11 April 2026)

Speakers for workshops outside Gauteng are sourced from that province to keep travel costs down. According to the brief, the workshops in rural schools in other provinces have been made possible only through the organiser personally sponsoring flight and accommodation expenses.

The stated vision is to continue these monthly workshops in all provinces of South Africa.
